Alfredo Rodriguez & Munir Hossn | Que Será Review
by Stamish Malcuss
Alfredo Rodriguez is back with a new single called “Que Será.” The pianist/composer finds inspiration in the song’s title from the 16th century; the phrase “que será” has served as a motto for human existence in times of uncertainty. The unexpected feels of today’s troubled times can place anyone’s mind into a frenzy, and Rodriguez has had time during the pandemic to reflect not only on the fragility of life but the importance of looking into the future with rose-colored glasses and embracing the unknown. “Que Será” (Mack Avenue Records) is the newest single from the Havana-born composer and a beacon of hope and good vibes.
“Que Será” was initially conceived in a hotel room while on tour with his longstanding musical partner Munir Hossn. Rodriquez explains, “We wanted to bring joy to the world in this difficult time in any way we can, and Munir and I hope people will find solace in this music and look forward to a brighter future together.” That mission is evident in the uplifting lyrics and the modern Latin groove makes this a song for bringing joy. The vocal doubling and multi-textured layers have a distinct influence of hip-hop and electronica combined with the Latin jazz elements.
Rodriguez adds a beautiful song to his collection of works that include five albums as a leader. “Que Será” reminds us of the power of hope and music; combined masterfully as with Rodriquez and Hossn; it becomes a transformative moment to enrich our lives.
